When taking out a mortgage the consumer credit act states that you must take out life assurance to cover the amount of the loan. Mortgage protection insurance is designed to pay off your mortgage in the event of your death. Your policy runs for the same length of time as your mortgage, and the premium you pay each month depends on the amount of your mortgage as well as your age, gender and health.

Life Cover – A life assurance policy is designed to pay out an amount of money to your dependents if you die while the policy is still in force.
Critical Illness cover is an optional benefit which pays a lump sum if you suffer from a serious illness such as cancer, heart attack, stroke etc. This cover pays out a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with one of the specific illnesses or disabilities that your policy covers. It is also sometimes called 'serious illness cover' and is often an optional benefit on a life insurance or mortgage protection policies.
